"This glass is kinda in the way, isn't it?" Always and forever Cry's fangirl, wow first fanart ever seriously Michi I just got motivationed to draw Cry after listening to Limelight (seriously I should stop spamming that song, my sister must be sicked of it haha) Just wanted to make some new screensavers for my iPad
You know he doesn't look like that, right? He's never shown his face. Most likely, he's not a very good-looking man. I don't know how he came to be represented by a pretty anime character in a green shirt, but he will probably never show his face if peoples' expectations of him are what's depicted here.
People do aware that he doesn't look like what most fanart has of him. But I think the reason why they all depicted him to have a pretty face just simply because... he is their idol? People like him so of course they would like to picture him with all the best features they can think of. A side reason might also be because of his voice, most of his fan (including me) finds his voice to be beautiful. A beautiful person would have a beautiful voice? Maybe, maybe not. You will never know. Cry might be aware of this so he is strict on refusing to show his face. And I have read some of the comment from his fans, a lot of them do admit that if they got a chance to see his face, they might refuse to because they want to keep their image of him in their head.
For me pretty anime character is what I usually draw so I can't really help it haha.
Will people idolize him if they find out that he isn't pretty? If people don't want to know that he is ugly, then isn't their idolatry based on an illusion? Will his success evaporate if people know the truth about his appearance?
It's unfortunate to me that a person's appearance can have such an enormous impact on their perceived value. I wonder if his success is based on talent or the character which represents him. Take away his expensive microphone, show his face - warts and all - and what is left? I like to think that his fanbase would remain loyal, but I'm not sure.
I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure if you are a true fan of him you would still idolize him no matter what he does. Even if he does something wrong, his fanbase would still protect him nevertheless, even if he looks ugly (which I don't think so, people have their preference, I'm not gonna put my judge on a person irl appearance, that is rude) his fans would still think that he looks way more beautiful than any other people out there. I don't know, it's a fan's nature to do so, you know?
I don't think it's Cry's appearance that have an impact on people. It's actually his videos, his jokes, his voices, his outgoing and friendly personality toward his followers that made him famous. People like him way before any of his fanart was made. People love Cry that is why they made fanart of him, not because of his fanart that depicts him to be some beautiful person that made people follow him. If you follow him just because you like his fanarts and do not like watching his video at all, I doubt you can call yourself a true Cry's fan.
In the end, it's just a fan's personal opinion to draw Cry as whatever they think he would look like in their mind. In a fan's mind, anything about their idol is beautiful, even if Cry is going to show his face, I bet his fan would still just draw him as a beautiful anime character anyway. (Just look at Markiplier or Pewdiepie and their fanarts and you will understand)
I commend you on the fact that you do not base your worth of a person by how they look. I am even guilty of being blinded by one's physical beauty, and I wish I was more like you. You sound like a true fan, and I doubt your opinion would be affected by trivial factors. I believe that is not the reason you draw him the way that you do, which is evident by your exquisite gallery of characters who are drawn with a fantastic beauty. That is your art, and it is your own unique style that makes your art special. Kudos.
I'm glad to know that you believe that Cry's fanbase would be unaffected if he showed his face, and he did not meet the idealized vision of him that his voice and character inspire in his fans. People who are beautiful on the inside are not always beautiful on the outside, and that's okay. No one has to be an underwear model to be celebrated for their talent. That's why I admire the Cry fandom more than the PewdiePie, Markplier, and Tobuscus fandoms. They have the advantage of being good-looking and physically charismatic. Cry does not benefit from physical appearances at all - except for the image people generate based on his personality, which, like you suggested, is going to exude beauty because of their appreciation of his talent.
It's fun to think of the alternate ways people can draw Cry. I was wondering, since you are more knowledgeable about Cry than I am, are there any alternate depictions of him than the green shirt and mask version? I'm curious to know if there are any other ways that people envision what he looks like. Maybe something completely different from the way that you rendered him here.
Ah, thank you so much for the kind compliment. I'm glad I got my point across and it's fine, we are just expressing our opinions here.
Cry not showing his face is kind of like a charm of himself, being mysterious and all. I think the version of Cry with brown hair, wearing mask and green shirt is what people usually draw him in so it became somewhat of a trend? It's almost like a default look for Cry when his fans talk about him I think. Beside this version of him, I don't think there is any alternative. Most of the time people might draw him in different clothes depend on the game they draw him from, but he would still be stuck with a mask and brown hair. Sometimes people might draw him with wearing glasses and wear his mask side way to show his face. As for something completely different... All I can think of is the Sup guy, a little white character that Cry himself has identified himself as
Ah, it's a little disappointing that there aren't any widely accepted versions of the Cry persona other than this one. It would be cool to see a completely new imagining of what he might look like since there are so many possibilities. He could have many sides to his appearance, like there are many sides to his personality. It might be a cool project for an artist with your skill. You probably have a lot on your plate already, though. I will use your art as an inspiration, and maybe I will be able try my hand at drawing Cry in a way that is personal to me. It won't turn out half as good as what you could create, but I think it would be loads of fun.
Anyway, it was very enlightening to talk to you about Cry and his appearance. I've gained a much better understanding due to your wealth of knowledge of art and the Cry fandom. I hope to speak with you again, although, I hope I didn't waste your time.
